Leaving. Friday Skywatch.

We were packed and eating breakfast well before five in the morning ready for the connections of bus, ferry, bus, to the airport  for our flight home. The ferry passengers were expecting the journey to be completed in darkness and went to sit in the comfy seats inside. We chose to stand on deck and watch the lorries and cars being loaded. The ramp was lifted and we were ready to sail. A large lorry arrived moments too late to be able to drive aboard as the ferry pulled away from the jetty. But we seemed to be going nowhere. Was the ferry going to return to the dockside and pick up the lorry? Twenty minutes passed, the sky lightened and we could see the silhouette of Monte Epomeo.
Three men in a small rubber dingy came and busied themselves somewhere below us. They removed two random floating bouys that must have been threatening to snare the ferry. Finally, as the sun rose, we were able to leave the harbour.

We had another misty view of Castello Aragonese
and took our last look at Ischia.
The delay in harbour threatened the timing of our connections. Sure enough, when we arrived in Naples we were stuck in the morning rush hour traffic. "We're going to miss the flight at this rate," I complained, our plans for being able to drive home in the daylight fast disappearing. For once I was pleased that the plane was late, allowing us to check-in our luggage.
On reflection I was happy with the delay because it gave me the opportunity to have this view of Vesuvius, looking quite magical in the early morning light.
Sharing this sky with those from all around the world seen on Friday Skywatch.

  1. I would have done like you and stayed outside to see the night time scenes.

Although the delay was an inconvenience, it certainly was worth it. That is a splendid view of Mt Vesuvius.

    1. I love being on a boat, but not cooped up inside! The sight of Vesuvius was worth the later frustration of being stuck in a traffic jam, (although it didn't feel so at the time!)
